Russian lawmaker advises women to avoid sex with foreign men during World Cup  4 Days ago

A Russian lawmaker is urging Russian women to use caution when engaging in romantic affairs with foreign men during this year's World Cup.

In an interview with Govorit Moskva, a Moscow radio station, on Wednesday, Tamara Pletnyova recommended that her fellow countrywomen avoid casual flings, citing a concern of unplanned pregnancies.

"There probably will be girls who will meet (foreign fans) and have children," Pletnyova told the radio station, according to a translation by The Associated Press. "Maybe there will be such girls or maybe not, I hope, maybe they will think better of it.

"I know that children suffer if they are abandoned and they are left here with the mother. ... Who will marry (them)?"

Pletnyova, the head of a parliamentary committee about family, women and children's issues, also said she would prefer that Russian women marry fellow Russian citizens and raise their families in the country.

"I would like to see people in our country to get married for love. It doesn’t matter what nationality they are (as long as) they are Russian citizens," Pletnyova told the radio station, according to the AP. "I want to see them build good families, live in harmony, have children and raise them, this is what I would like to see."

Pletnyova's comments drew criticism on social media on the eve of the World Cup's opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia. In response, a second parliament member, Mikhail Degtyaryov, told reporters Thursday that the country wants "more love stories, more children, more mixed unions" during the World Cup.

"The more love stories we have connected to the world championship, the more people from different countries fall in love, the more children are born, the better," Degtyaryov  said, according to Russian state news agency Tass.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
